Painting from nature

"I have been working at the side of a lake that is edged with mature trees. The heavy skirts of the trees, brush and hover above the water. The red earth, light, weather and tree braches are reflected in its still surface. These are my muse at present. This damp, earthy and draughty space is refreshingly solitary and quiet. Yet working from Nature is by no means romantic. It’s physical, mucky and uncomfortable and I would not have it any other way. It is this transitory and physical engagement that I love and endeavour to capture in the work."

Will and Eve's World

“When I had my two children, Will and Eve, I was suddenly made more aware of the transitory nature of life. It is exciting, beautiful and awe- inspiring all at the same time. I want to recall it, hold it, intensify it and explore it all over again in my paintings. This is a mind of grieving and celebration of the passing of the moment, but at the same time it is not sentimental or nostalgic. It gives me the ability to be both there in the experience and also stand on the outside viewing it from every angle, pausing and stretching out the good bits. These are ambitious paintings celebrating two small people in their new world, with personalities that come through the paintings. There is tenderness, playfulness and exploration intended in these paintings. They are reflections of Will and Eve in their new world.'

Swimming

"My children were learning to swim and I sat by the pool watching them being held up in the water. I cannot swim and this detachment increased my fascination of how they moved, floated and finally began to swim so beautifully through the water. There have been many discussions about the significance of me not being able to swim but none are negative, quite the contrary. I feel that it is as a result of this fact that I have found so many ways of inventing marks, shapes and colours to emphasise the sensation through the paint. I have learnt to swim in my paintings, embracing improvisation and ‘diving’ into my subject -  the ‘subject’ being my paintings."

This book celebrates the journey that my painting has taken me on. From paintings in response to the theme of my children leaning to swim, back through bodies of work that have influenced and shaped my practice as a painter.
